reading room cafe
building p, ground floor
victoria university
88 ballarat rd
footscray, melbourne 3011
We parked on Hoadley Court as directed - not the prettiest entrance ever - but persist to building P where another world awaits. The building itself is modern and architecturally designed, and Reading Room Cafe is a most welcoming sight! The space is compact and wood panelled with plenty of natural light from huge windows looking out to the university grounds. My attendance today was by invite to media and bloggers as a preview to the reading rooms upcoming 'Pop up for Charity' weekends only, for 8 weeks (April and May 2012). Service was attentive and snappy, coffee was perfect, food was prompt and delicious... what can I say. If you are in the area over the weekends over the next few weeks pop in! The cafe is open 'as normal' during the week catering to uni staff and students with sandwiches and baked goodies - as opposed to the sit down weekend menu of hot breakfasts (including Sweetcorn and Pumpkin Fritters with avocado, photographed below) and lunches. High tea also available (three tiered stands pictured below) for a special treat!
20% of proceeds over the 8 weekends will be donated to local charities.

This place exceeded my expectations. You know a place is great from the moment you walk in. It has an X-factor. And this suburban cafe sure has that. My little one devoured a gingerbread man in minutes and I couldn't pass a dinky lemon cheesecake topped with lemon curd... yummo and only $3.50! My flat white was well made and there was a comfortable buzz about the place.

(NOW CLOSED)
Just opened this new cafe as a lot going for it. The building and setting are amazing. The guys have a passion for coffee (Gridlock), food and wine (they are licensed) Open seven days too, great for beach day-trippers and locals alike!
