footscray milking station

Footscray Milking Station
35 Bunbury St
Footscray
Melbourne 3011

Very recently opened, here we have another example of a brave opening in an unlikely suburban location. Visit the toilet block in the courtyard to see the original 'milking station' where cows from neighbouring pastures were bought in and milked, and the milk was sold from the very same shed (out the little hatch window you will spot below..) It is a tidy progression really from Milking Station to Milk Bar (some exterior signage preserved) to cafe. On to the pictures....

Following are shots of the original milking station - now the toilets.

After my children started swimming lessons 'over the bridge' last year I looked out for a good place to stop for coffee (and energising hot chocolates!) afterwards - and my prayers were answered. I do love a neighbourhood cafe that gets it right. It lifts an area, you know. Just watch them house prices rising within a bock of this place... (that is not a fact so much as a prediction!)
Oh, and the very well made coffee is Gridlock. Yum.

Standing room only, as it says on the threshold... This place is about coffee. Black, white or filter. In or out. Simple. Plenty of worker-bees opt for out, but those who stay are treated to minimalist (almost quaker) interiors with sweet touches like potted succulents, earthenware sugar bowls and a handsome wood panelled counter. Understated interiors, friendly service and great coffee. Now for the pictures...
